Advent 2021: Jesse Tree Day 24

Day 24: Jesus Christ

Today’s symbol is a symbol of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. This reminds us to celebrate the love of Jesus in our lives every single day, not just for advent.

Reading: Luke 2

Reflection:

Into the darkness of that dank stable, a child is born. Into the darkness of the world, a light shines. From the knotty, gnarled stump of Jesse, a shoot springs up.

This is it. To you is born this day a Saviour. A Saviour!

The waiting is over. Hope is here. This is the olive branch in the beak of Noah’s dove, the confirmation that all is not lost. Life will flourish again.

And who gets to witness it? Who gets the privilege of being called over to see the solitary green shoot, so fresh it hasn’t yet unfurled? The shepherds.

Not the clean, charismatic professionals with access to big marketing budgets and platforms to publicise the news. Just a shabby bunch of shepherds. Maybe it’s because they share the vocation of the one who was just born; like him, they tend and guide a dim-witted flock, prone to wandering. Maybe they’re more likely to rejoice in his birth rather than feel threatened by it. Maybe they understand best of all what his coming means.

And guess what: today, you’re among those shepherds. You get to hear the news, to be a witness. You’re invited to the birthing room of Jesus. You’re sent back to glorify and praise God for all you’ve heard and seen.

What a privilege! Cherish it. Go see the Saviour and come back singing.

In the midst of our busy lives during advent, we forget the core reason of why we celebrate this magical time of year; Jesus! This little baby, humble and full of grace, born to loving parents Mary and Joseph, Son of God, wrapped up in a tiny stable has finally come to the earth. He is here for us. He was sent to earth for us. For God so loved the world, He gave His one and only Son (John 3:16), because we are so loved, God knew we needed Jesus. It is indeed the greatest story ever told; that this humble, little baby, saved the entire world and did it all with love and hope and light.

Questions:

How will you live your life with Jesus this advent? How will you continue this after advent has been celebrated and we continue with our lives?

How will you carry the love of Jesus Christ in your hearts?

Prayer: Loving Father,

We sin, and you forgive us. We make bad choices, and you are there to guide us back to your grace. We mess up and forget to look to you, and you send us your Son. Thank you that the journey doesn’t end here; that we have the love of you and Jesus Christ in our hearts now and forever, in all that we do. Thank you that we have the forgiveness of Jesus for all the wrong we do. We pray we can remember the birth, life and sacrifice of Jesus in our daily lives, so that we can spread the Good News of Jesus in all we do. We pray this in the name of Jesus the Son, who dwells with you and the Holy Spirit: one God, now and forever, amen.
